Northern California Wildfire Creates ‘Fire Tornado’

OpsLens Video

According to a report by Business Insider, the Carr Fire currently tearing through Northern California has begun producing unique weather patterns, including what some scientists have called “fire tornadoes.” The Los Angeles Times reports that the fire is what is known as a “plume-dominated” blaze, meaning that the column of smoke and ash is so large and hot that it can not only control the path of the blaze but also create local wind and temperature differences. Business Insider reports that while the fire’s movements may look like a tornado, some scientists claim that a different mechanism, involving intense updrafts, is responsible for creating what appears as a funnel of fire.
