House Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler: ‘This is Formal Impeachment Proceedings’

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) has acknowledged that the panel is conducting a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Nadler also said that the committee will decide whether to bring the articles of impeachment to the House floor by the end of the year. Nadler stated:

“This is formal impeachment proceedings. We are investigating all the evidence, gathering the evidence. And we will [at the] conclusion of this — hopefully by the end of the year — vote to vote articles of impeachment to the House floor. Or we won’t. That’s a decision that we’ll have to make. But that’s exactly the process we’re in right now.”

While many Democrats and activists have been pushing for President Donald Trump to be impeached, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has so far resisted. Pelosi believes that impeachment will be too divisive for the country and could even boost President Trump in the upcoming 2020 Presidential race.

In recent court filings, the House Judiciary Committee also sought grand jury materials and testimony from former special counsel Robert Mueller’s star witnesses. Last month, Democrats put in writing via a court document that they were considering impeachment.

The Judiciary Committee has also sued former White House counsel Don McGahn, who has thus far not responded to the Committee’s subpoena. McGahn’s name had appeared 529 times in the 448-page Mueller report. Democrats have accused McGahn of trying to shut down Mueller’s investigation.

Will Trump face impeachment? There’s a chance that impeachment could pass the House. However, with Republicans in charge of the Senate, the president almost certainly wouldn’t be impeached. Ultimately, the Senate acts as the “jury” during impeachment and Republicans would likely find the president “not guilty,” so to speak.
