Pentagon officials have stated that the battle for Raqqah, ISIS’ capital city in Syria, could begin in the coming weeks. However, ethnic divides are complicating matters. As is the case in Iraq with their own internal ethnic struggles, Turkish backed rebels and Syrian Kurds hold differing views on how land will be divided following the caliphate’s collapse. Turkey wishes to have a buffer zone between their border and the Kurds, while the Kurds are aiming to expand their territory.
While it is anticipated that all parties will focus on their mutual enemy, ISIS, during the battle, it remains unknown how the dust will settle after the group is removed from Syria.
